Every Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 oil change needs fresh gaskets to seal properly — reusing an old, compressed strainer plate gasket is the fastest way to leave a puddle in your driveway. Why You Need This Kit
The factory paper gaskets compress significantly the first time they're torqued. Once they've been compressed and heat-cycled, they will not seal properly a second time — and the failure mode is a slow oil leak from the bottom of the engine that's a pain to track down. Every oil change should include fresh gaskets. At a few dollars each, there's no reason to skip them.
Installation Notes
- Always replace both strainer gaskets together. Don't reuse one and replace the other.
- Install gaskets dry — no sealant or RTV is required or recommended.
- Clean both sealing surfaces thoroughly before installation. Old gasket residue is a common cause of leaks.
- Torque the strainer plate nuts to factory spec — over-tightening will crush the gasket and cause leaks rather than prevent them. Recommended: 5 ft-lbs.
- Replace the drain plug crush washer every time. It's a single-use part.
Maintenance Recommendation
Air-cooled VW engines should have their oil changed every 3,000 miles. Keep a few of these kits in the shop or garage so you're never tempted to skip them at service time.
