Sway-A-Way specialized axle solution for high-performance Volkswagen IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) setups. Features an extended spline design that removes the inboard shoulder, allowing the CV joint to float along the shaft — critical for long-travel off-road buggies or lowered street cars to prevent the CV cage from bottoming out and shattering during extreme suspension articulation.
Performance & Fitment
- Application: High-Performance IRS Rear Axle Set
- Length: 15 5/8"
- Spline: 33-Tooth (1.062" OD, 2 3/8" spline length)
- VW Type 1 (Beetle/Bug): High-performance street or off-road IRS builds
- VW Type 2 (Bus/Transporter): Heavy-duty replacement for custom IRS conversions
- VW Type 3: Compatible with IRS-equipped Notchback, Squareback, and Fastback models
- Compatibility: Designed to work with standard 33-spline CV joints (typically Type 1 or Type 2 / 002 styles depending on the specific hub setup)
Premium Construction
- Material: Manufactured from solid high-strength alloy steel, built to handle the torque loads of high-horsepower air-cooled engines
- Extended Spline Design: The 2 3/8" long spline without a shoulder allows the CV to slide freely, accommodating changes in track width as the suspension moves through its arc, eliminating cage breakage caused by axle bind
- Heat Treatment: Through-hardened to achieve the perfect balance of surface hardness and core flexibility
- Manufacturing: Centerless ground for a perfectly consistent diameter and a smooth surface that resists stress risers
- Finish: Industrial-grade powder coating for long-term corrosion resistance
⚠️ Technical Installation Notes
- CV Joint Float: Ensure your CV boots are high-quality and flexible (such as silicone or heavy-duty rubber). Because the CV joint floats on these axles, the boot must be able to stretch and compress more than a standard setup.
- Snap Ring Usage: Use the correct snap rings to retain the CV joint on the shaft. Even though the joint floats, it must remain within the functional range of the splines.
- Grease: Use high-moly CV grease. The extended movement of the joint on the spline requires consistent lubrication to prevent wear on the axle's splines.
What's Included
- Pair of VW IRS axles
- Spirol Lock circlips to secure the CV joint
