VW 75 Amp Alternator Conversion Kit | Black Finish | 1966-1979 Beetle, Ghia, Thing | 00-9487-0
Upgrade your classic Volkswagen from a dated generator to a high-output charging system with the EMPI 75 Amp Alternator Kit. This kit is specifically designed for vehicles running additional electrical loads—such as high-output ignition systems, modern stereos, or extra lighting—that factory charging units simply can't handle.
Engineered with all-new components, this internally regulated alternator eliminates the need for an external voltage regulator, simplifying your engine bay wiring. The durable satin black finish provides a modern, "nothing to hide" aesthetic that perfectly complements black engine tins and custom fabrication work. By moving to a 75-amp system, you ensure consistent voltage and cooler operating temperatures compared to stock configurations.
Key Features:
-
75 Amp Output: Delivers significantly more power than standard 55-amp alternators, ideal for "amp-hungry" accessories.
-
All-New Construction: Manufactured with 100% new armatures and components; no rebuilt or core-exchange parts used.
-
Integrated Regulator: Features a built-in internal voltage regulator for a cleaner, more reliable electrical setup.
-
Complete Conversion Package: Includes everything needed to swap your generator: alternator, stand, pulley, strap, belt, and backing plates.
-
Modern Aesthetic: The resilient black coating provides a sleek, professional look that resists chipping and heat-related fading.
Installation Guide: Step-by-Step
Note: This high-output unit requires a reliable ground path. Failure to install the specified ground wire can damage the internal regulator.
-
Preparation: Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the existing generator/alternator, stand, and fan assembly.
-
Mount the Stand: Install the new black alternator stand to the engine case. Use a fresh gasket for a leak-free seal.
-
Wiring Conversion: If replacing a generator, bypass your old external regulator. The main B+ cable will connect directly to the post on the new alternator.
-
The Ground Rule (Mandatory): Install a 10-gauge (minimum) ground wire from the alternator body directly to the alternator stand studs on the engine case. This is critical for high-amperage circuit stability.
-
Fan Assembly: Transfer your cooling fan to the new alternator using the provided 3-piece black backing plate set.
-
Mounting: Place the alternator on the stand and secure it with the included black strap.
-
Pulley & Belt: Install the pulley and the included alternator belt. Use shims to achieve proper alignment and tension (roughly 1/2" of deflection).
-
Testing: Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and use a multimeter to verify a charging output between 13.8V and 14.4V.
