Restore your classic Volkswagen’s original stopping power with the EMPI Front Drum Brake Kit. Specifically engineered for 1958–1964 Link Pin models, this kit is the definitive "all-in-one" solution for a front-end safety overhaul. Whether you are performing a "nothing to hide" restoration or refreshing a reliable driver, this kit eliminates the need to source individual springs, clips, or hoses.
Every component in this kit is 100% new—no core charges or refurbished parts are required. It is designed as a direct bolt-on replacement for your factory hardware, maintaining the original engineering and "Wide-5" aesthetics of your chassis. By replacing pitted drums and aging wheel cylinders, you restore the firm, predictable pedal feel essential for modern traffic.
Key Features:
-
Comprehensive Front-End Kit: Replaces all internal and external wear items from the drums to the cotter pins.
-
Period-Correct 5x205 Pattern: Retains the iconic early 5-lug pattern used on vintage Beetles and Ghias.
-
Link Pin Specific: Tailored for the front spindles of 1958–1964 models for a perfect, no-modification fit.
-
All-New Components: Cast and stamped to modern tolerances, providing superior heat dissipation over thin, worn factory drums.
-
Hydraulic Refresh: Includes new wheel cylinders and OE-style rubber hoses to eliminate leaks and pressure loss.
Installation Guide: Step-by-Step
Note: This kit is for Link Pin front ends only. Ensure your spindles are clean and the bearing surfaces are smooth before assembly.
-
Teardown: Raise the vehicle and support the front beam on jack stands. Remove the grease caps, cotter pins, and thrust washers to pull the old drums.
-
Clean & Inspect: Use brake cleaner to strip away old grease and dust from the backing plate. Check for any cracks or warping in the spindle area.
-
Hydraulics: Unbolt the old wheel cylinders and install the new units provided. Swap the old flexible hoses for the new OE Style Brake Hoses.
-
Shoe Assembly: Install the new brake shoes using the provided hardware kit.
-
Pro Tip: Lightly grease the "pads" on the backing plate where the shoes rest to prevent squeaking and ensure smooth movement.
-
-
Bearings & Hub: This is the ideal time to clean and repack your Front Wheel Bearings. Slide the new drum onto the spindle.
-
Secure: Reinstall the thrust washer and axle nut. Tighten to eliminate play while still allowing the drum to spin freely. Never skip the cotter pin.
-
Adjustment: Use the new star adjusters to bring the shoes into light contact with the drum, then back off until the drum spins without dragging.
-
Bleed the System: Perform a full system bleed starting at the passenger rear and ending at the driver front to ensure all air is removed.
