Upgrade your classic Volkswagen’s stopping power without sacrificing the iconic look of early-style wheels. Originally engineered for the EMPI "Buggy in a Box" program, this Upgraded Rear Disc Brake Kit is the ultimate bolt-on solution for street performance and off-road reliability.
This kit features a specialized 1-piece rotor design with the early 5x205 bolt pattern, eliminating the need for clunky adapters or multi-piece hubs. The "Zero Off-Set" engineering ensures your track width remains factory-spec, keeping your tires tucked perfectly under the fenders—an essential detail for high-end "nothing to hide" builds where fitment and stance are everything.
Why This is the Ultimate Brake Upgrade:
-
Zero Off-Set Design: Maintains factory wheel positioning. No spacers or adapters required, ensuring your 5x205 wheels sit exactly where they belong.
-
Modern Stopping Power: Replaces fading, heavy drums with firm, responsive disc brakes that dissipate heat efficiently—ideal for modern traffic or steep off-road descents.
-
Integrated E-Brake: Unlike many racing kits, this version includes a fully functional emergency brake setup, making it 100% street-legal and practical for daily use.
-
Simplified Bolt-On Installation: The 1-piece rotor and cast brackets eliminate "extra parts," reducing potential failure points and simplifying maintenance.
Installation Guide: Step-by-Step
Note: This kit requires the use of 15-inch wheels to clear the calipers. A professional brake bleed is mandatory after installation.
-
Preparation: Secure the vehicle on jack stands and remove the rear wheels and factory brake drums.
-
Clear the Spindle: Remove the old drum backing plate, shoes, and wheel cylinders. Clean the bearing carrier surface thoroughly.
-
Mount the Bracket: Install the heavy-duty cast mounting brackets onto the axle flange using the provided gaskets and hardware. Ensure the caliper mounting ears are positioned toward the rear.
-
Install the Rotor: Slide the 1-piece 5x205 rotor onto the splined axle shaft. Secure it with your factory axle nut (ensure proper torque to seat the bearing).
-
Caliper & Pads: Install the brake pads into the calipers and bolt the calipers to the mounting brackets.
-
Plumbing: Replace your old rubber lines with the included Upgraded Stainless Steel Braided Lines. These offer superior pedal feel by eliminating line expansion.
-
E-Brake Cables: Route the new e-brake cables through the chassis tubes and connect them to the caliper actuation levers.
-
Bleed the System: Bleed the brakes starting from the furthest wheel from the master cylinder until the pedal is firm.
